Overview

At a glance

Howeston Golf Course is a family-owned public course at Birkdale in Brisbane's Redlands, with 27 holes laid out as three nines. It is pay and play with no membership or booking needed.

How it compares

27-hole club
  • Several nines, so you can play different combinations.
  • Green fees from $30 for 18 holes, well below the typical $45 around Brisbane (the cheapest of the 12 18-hole courses that publish visitor rates).
  • Rated 4.3 on Google, about the typical 4.3 for courses around Brisbane.

Howeston has been a pay and play public course since 1972, set along a creek at Birkdale. The 27 holes are three separate nines, and two are normally in use at once, so most golfers play either nine or an 18 made from two of them. There is no booking system: golfers turn up, pay and tee off. Reviewers like that, and several call it the best value around, though one found the queue on the first tee slow on a busy day and others suggest weekdays for a quieter round. Golfers often mention water, big trees and variety from nine to nine, and describe it as challenging yet forgiving enough for beginners. Conditions are generally described as good and improving. The fee is the same for nine or 18 holes, $30 on weekdays and $35 on weekends and public holidays. Electric carts are $45 for 18 or $30 for nine, club hire is $10 to $15 and a pull buggy is $5. There is a small golf shop and a shed with barbecue facilities, food and soft drinks, but no alcohol is served and the club has no clubhouse in the usual sense. Enter through Creek Road. The course is closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
