How it compares

Short and friendly
  • Par 70, 5,249 m.
  • Green fees from $35 for 18 holes, well below the typical $60 on the Gold Coast (only 1 of the 11 18-hole courses that publish visitor rates is cheaper).
  • At 5,249 m it's shorter than most 18-hole courses on the Gold Coast (typical 6,130 m).
  • Rated 4.3 on Google, about the typical 4.4 for courses on the Gold Coast.

Helensvale is a public 18-hole course in the northern Gold Coast, listed at par 70 and 5,249 metres. It is a shorter layout, but golfers often describe it as a real test because of the tight, tree-lined fairways, doglegs, creeks and plenty of ponds. Reviewers say the par 5s are a highlight and that the greens are undulating, and many warn that you can lose a few balls in the water. Birdlife is common and some golfers mention seeing koalas.

The course changed hands in recent times and reviewers who knew it before say the new owners have put a lot of work into the course and clubhouse, with conditions improving quickly. The main complaint is that it holds water. After heavy rain the low-lying holes can get wet and waterlogged, so dry weather is the best time to play. A couple of reviewers would like more bridges between fairways, since walking between holes can involve long detours, and mosquito repellent gets a mention.

Visitors can play 9 or 18 holes, with weekday rates a little cheaper than weekends. Buggies are available to hire and personal carts are allowed for a fee; hire sets are limited to certain days and times, so speak to staff first. There is no driving range, but golfers mention chipping and putting areas. The clubhouse has a bar that reviewers rate for its drinks selection and sunset views after a round, and there is a function room. Bookings are made online through the club's booking site, and some reviewers have booked by email. The course suits social golfers, beginners and walkers who want good value.
